Learn How To Spot Water And Flood Damage In Your Home
Water damage is a disaster that can happen to your home quietly, and without you even knowing it’s there. Water damage can be subtle, and it’s important to look for the signs and symptoms of the disaster. The sooner you can spot, catch, and repair water damage, the better. Water damage can cause thousands, sometimes even tens of thousands of dollars to repair, and it’s a headache that no home owner wants to handle.
Dripping Water & Puddles
This sign is an obvious give away that you have experienced water damage in your home. If you notice puddles starting to build indoors, this is a good indicator of leakage, seeping, or lack of ventilation in your home.
Smell
Sometimes, you’ll smell moisture, or mildew, and even mold in the air. This is another tell tale sign of water damage. Depending on your location and property, the amount of moisture in the air does vary. If you live in a humid area, then a dehumidifier may be the best option to address the problem, and you may not even need restoration services.
Discoloration
Water can lead to paint fading, and it can also remove dye from furniture, carpets, and rugs. Mold on the other hand, can lead to dark patches of green fuzz.
That’s not to say there are other factors that can drain the color from furniture and carpets. For example, sunlight can bleach carpets and furniture if the objects in question have been directly exposed for extended periods of time.
Water marks on walls and windows, where water may just be running down the surface, may be noticable. This issue is common particularly if you’ve had issues with leaking, or overflowing gutters. Unfortunately, this commonly leads to other problems like damages to the foundation. This can be a very serious problem in regards to your home. Alternatively, if the ceiling has defined water stains on it, it’s an obvious sign of serious water damage. An example of defined water stains can be seen below:
Soft Patches and Peeling
Moisture seeping into the floors or walls can over time break down the fibers that hold it together. A dip around the toilet can be another example that you may have a leak. Additionally, tiles coming off of the wall, or the wall being soft and crumbling in certain areas, can be a definite indicator that there’s a moisture problem.
Cold Spots
A property with lots of moisture on the walls can make the property much harder to heat as it reaches the dew point temperature. This creates a vicious circle of sorts as the cold temperature of the walls attracts even more moisture and condensation. If your house constantly feels cold, this can be an indicator of moisture issues in your home.
These are just a few of the problems, and signs that can come with your home being exposed to water damage. If you’re unsure about whether your home has been exposed to water damage or not, consult a specialist who is certain, and can provide you an estimate for restoration services if it it’s necessary.
